Atrium Crete - About Crete

Greek Island

ATRIUM CRETE Welcome's you to Crete, the largest island of Greece, the fifth largest in the Mediterranean and the most southern border of the European Union.

Hellenic Home of the Gods

Crete must surely be a gift from the Gods. It harbours a coast line of rugged diversity, hemmed by over a 1,000 km of golden sandy beaches, which are kissed by the warmest of crystal, clear blue seas. At 257 km long with a maximum width of 60 km and a population of approximately 700,000 inhabitants. It lies on the southern most border of the E.U, on an east to west axis, at a point where the continents of Asia, Africa and Europe meet. Due to its southern location the island enjoys one of the best Mediterranean climates, with sub-tropical summers and on average records 3000 hours of sunshine per year. That's an amazing 8 hours a day! Crete has an intriguing history, entwined with mythology, creating an island of unique character and splendour. It is an island diverse in natural beauty that includes; impressive mountains, snow capped until early summer, quaint unspoilt villages nestling in vine-clad foothills and spectacular gorges.

Three mountain ranges rise majestically to almost 2,500m, The White Mountains, Psiloritis and Dikti. Almost forming a backbone along the length of the island they can remain snow capped until early summer. Acting as a barrier to the weather, they create one of the most temperate climates in Europe. As a result, Crete enjoys some of the most mildest winters in the Mediterranean. Allowing you to enjoy 12 months use of your property.

Travel to Crete

Crete has two international airports Heraklion and Hania. Both are serviced by direct charters, with scheduled flights to and from all major European airports throughout the winter months. The island is also accessible by car via major ferry operators, running regular mainland services and excursions to several of the Aegean islands from the ports of Heraklion, Hania, Rethymno and Agios Nikolaos. The road system makes it possible to access most of the island. But if driving is not your forte, operates a regular bus service between the major towns of Hania, Rethymno and the city of Heraklion with connections to many rural village locations.

Crete has a comparable Health Service and apart from the new modern hospitals in the city of Iraklion and the town of Chania, most of the larger villages also have modern medical centres. Add to this a high quality of life, criminality almost zero and EEC citizens having the same rights as Greeks.
